Supporting Safety, Clarity, and Next Steps for Families

When a school raises concerns about a student’s safety or well-being, it can feel overwhelming for families. At Neema Counseling, we provide professional, compassionate risk assessments to help clarify concerns, support student safety, and guide next steps in collaboration with caregivers and schools.

What Is a Risk Assessment?

A risk assessment is a structured clinical evaluation used to understand whether a student may be at risk of harming themselves or others. The purpose is not to label or punish, but to identify current concerns, protective factors, and appropriate supports so that students can remain safe and receive the level of care they need.

Risk assessments often explore:

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

  • Expressions of distress, withdrawal, or emotional overwhelm

  • Behavioral changes noticed at school or home

  • Concerns about aggression or safety

  • Stressors such as trauma, bullying, loss, or family changes

  • Strengths and protective supports already in place

What to Expect From the Assessment Process

Our risk assessments are designed to be thorough, thoughtful, and family-centered.

Length & Format

  • One 2-hour assessment session

  • Conducted by a licensed therapist

  • Includes time with the student and caregiver(s)

During the Assessment, We Will:

  • Meet with the student to understand their thoughts, emotions, and current stressors

  • Assess risk to self and/or others using evidence-based clinical practices

  • Identify protective factors and existing supports

  • Clarify what level of care, if any, may be needed

  • Answer questions and provide guidance for caregivers

Coordination With the School

We coordinate with the school counselor or school team to support continuity of care.

  • A Release of Information (ROI) is required to communicate with the school

  • Only limited, safety-relevant information is shared

  • We focus on risk level, safety recommendations, and support planning, not therapy details

Our goal is to help families and schools work together while respecting confidentiality and privacy.

After the Assessment: Plan of Care

Once the assessment is complete:

  • The therapist will review findings with the parent or guardian

  • A clear plan of care will be shared, which may include:

    • Safety recommendations

    • School-day supports

    • Therapy or higher-level care recommendations (if needed)

    • Follow-up or re-assessment timelines

  • You will leave with clear next steps, not unanswered questions

Cost

  • $250 flat fee

  • Covers the full 2-hour assessment and feedback

  • Payment is due at the time of service
(Insurance is not billed for standalone risk assessments)
