If you've been praying, reading your Bible, and trying to hand your worry over to God, and you still wake up with that tight, racing feeling in your chest, please hear this first. You are not failing as a Christian. You may simply need support that honors both your faith and your mental health.

A lot of the people we sit with at Neema Counseling come to us after doing everything they know to do spiritually. They've memorized the verses about anxiety. They've asked their small group to pray. And they still feel stuck. If that's you, you're in good company, and there's real help available right here in Houston.

What is Christian counseling for anxiety?

Christian counseling for anxiety is professional, evidence-based therapy that integrates your faith with proven psychological tools. It isn't a substitute for prayer or Scripture, and it isn't a lecture about trusting God more. It's a space where you can talk openly about your worry, your doubt, and your spiritual life with a licensed counselor who takes both your mind and your faith seriously.

At Neema Counseling, we believe that faith and science are meant to work together, not contradict each other. Anxiety has real physical, emotional, and relational roots, and God gave us tools to address all of them.

Why doesn't prayer alone always take the anxiety away?

Prayer matters deeply, and it isn't a failure when anxiety lingers anyway. Anxiety often has roots in your nervous system, past trauma, family patterns, and the way your brain has learned to scan for danger. Those are things therapy is designed to work on directly, alongside your faith rather than in competition with it.

Think of it the way you'd think about a broken bone. You would pray over it, and you would also see a doctor to set it. Your mental health deserves that same both/and care. The research backs this up. A comprehensive review of studies on faith and health found that religion and spirituality are consistently linked with better mental health outcomes, including lower anxiety, while also noting that spiritual struggle is a normal part of many people's journeys and one that support can help with.

Does faith-based therapy actually work?

Yes. Faith-integrated therapy is just as effective as standard therapy for reducing distress, and it tends to leave people with stronger spiritual well-being on top of that. A large meta-analysis of 97 studies including more than 7,000 people found that therapy tailored to a person's religious and spiritual beliefs produced meaningful improvement in both psychological and spiritual functioning.

Researchers have even built and tested faith-adapted versions of well-known treatments. One team developed Religiously Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and found it worked about as well as conventional CBT for depression, while drawing on each person's own beliefs and practices as a source of strength.

What does Christian counseling at Neema look like?

Our team uses an eclectic approach, which is a fancy way of saying our counselors are trained in different methods and match the approach to the person in front of them. Depending on your therapist and what you're walking through, that might include:

Christian counselor listening compassionately to a client during an anxiety counseling session in Houston
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to gently untangle the anxious thoughts that spin in the background
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for the anxiety that shows up most in your closest relationships
  • EMDR for anxiety rooted in past trauma
  • Trauma-informed and attachment-focused care for the deeper wounds underneath the worry

Every one of our counselors brings professional training and a heart for faith-centered work. You can talk freely about prayer, doubt, and spiritual confusion without any judgment. You can also simply come for compassionate, professional care, since some of our clients want the faith piece woven in and others don't. Our team provides both. You can read more about our Christian counseling services or meet our counselors any time.

Is Christian counseling affordable? Do you take insurance?

We work hard to keep good care within reach, because we know cost is one of the biggest reasons people put off getting help. We're in-network with a wide range of plans, including Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Oscar, Ambetter, Lyra, Magellan, UMR, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicaid, and Medicare. If we're out of network for you, we provide superbills you can submit for possible reimbursement.

Our rates are kept competitive with the Texas average. Sessions with a Licensed Professional Counselor are $175 for the initial intake and $150 for ongoing sessions, and sessions with a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate are $150 for intake and $135 ongoing. We accept cash and credit cards, including FSA and HSA funds. Some of our counselors also offer a limited number of reduced-rate sessions based on household size and income. If affordability is a concern, please reach out anyway. We'll help you explore your options, and you can see the full breakdown on our rates and insurance page.

How do I get started?

The first step is easier than you might think. We offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video, where you can ask questions, hear about a counselor's approach, and get a feel for whether it seems like a good fit. There's no pressure and no commitment.

You've already carried this on your own, and alongside your faith, for long enough. If you're ready for support that honors both your walk with God and your mental health, we'd be honored to walk with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a Christian to come to Neema Counseling? No. We welcome clients of all backgrounds and beliefs. Some people seek us out specifically for faith-integrated therapy, and others just want compassionate, professional care. We provide both.

Is Christian counseling the same as biblical counseling? Not quite. Biblical counseling is usually offered through a church and focuses on Scripture and spiritual guidance. Christian counseling at Neema is provided by licensed mental health professionals who integrate faith with evidence-based clinical methods, so you get both spiritual sensitivity and professional care.

What if I've already tried prayer and spiritual disciplines? Many of our clients come to us after doing everything they know spiritually. Therapy doesn't replace your faith. It adds psychological tools that support growth and healing alongside it.

Will my therapist push their beliefs on me? No. Your counselor follows your lead on how much faith you want woven into your sessions. You set the tone, and there's no judgment either way.

Do you offer online Christian counseling in Texas? Yes. We offer secure telehealth throughout Texas, so you can meet with one of our licensed counselors from anywhere in the state.
